Gujia Recipe

Gujia (or Gujiya) is a popular North Indian sweet, especially made during festivals like Holi and Diwali. It is a deep-fried dumpling stuffed with a sweet filling of khoya (mawa), nuts, and sugar, enclosed in a crispy outer shell made from refined flour.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a bowl, mix all-purpose flour with ghee.
    • Rub the ghee into the flour until it has a crumbly texture.
    • Add water little by little and knead into a firm dough. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • Heat a pan and add crumbled khoya. Cook on low flame until it softens.
    • Remove from heat and let it cool.
    • Mix khoya with powdered sugar (jaggery powder ), nuts, grated coconut, and cardamom powder.
  3. Shape the Gujia:
    • Roll out small dough balls into thin circles.
    • Place a spoonful of filling in the center.
    • Apply water on the edges, fold the dough over the filling, and seal the edges. You can crimp them or use a fork for a decorative look.
  4. Fry the Gujia:
    • Heat oil or ghee in a deep pan.
    • Fry the gujias on medium-low heat until golden brown.
    • Drain on paper towels and let them cool.
  5. Serve:
    • Once cooled, store them in an airtight container. enjoy!
